How Does A380 Compare With ADC12 for Aluminum Die Casting?

A380 and ADC12 are both common aluminum die casting material directions, but they should not be treated as automatically interchangeable without drawing and customer approval. Buyers usually compare them for availability, regional standard, mechanical direction, castability, machining response, surface finish and certificate wording.

When a project is quoted through custom aluminum die casting, the supplier should state whether the quote follows A380, ADC12 or an approved equivalent route.

A380 vs ADC12 Comparison Table

Comparison Item

A380 Direction

ADC12 Direction

Typical use

General aluminum die cast parts in North American-style specifications

Common aluminum die casting direction in many Asia-based supply chains

RFQ concern

Confirm exact alloy callout and certificate requirement

Confirm whether the buyer accepts ADC12 as equivalent

Castability review

Review wall thickness, ribs, bosses and porosity areas

Review the same geometry risks and supplier process control

Machining review

Check bores, threads, sealing faces and opened pores

Check machined surfaces and burr control after tapping

Finish review

Validate coating, painting or polishing samples

Validate the same finish standard before production

Equivalent Approval Should Be Written

If the drawing calls out A380 but the quote proposes ADC12, the buyer should approve the substitution in writing before tooling starts. The approval should include the material standard, certificate wording, finish requirement and whether the substitution affects inspection or customer documentation.

Example: Enclosure Regional Standard Review

An aluminum electronics enclosure originally specified A380. The supplier proposed ADC12 because it matched local production availability. The buyer approved the equivalent only after reviewing coating appearance, machined boss quality and material certificate format.

Equivalent Material Release

If A380 and ADC12 are being compared, the approval should not rely only on verbal equivalency. The quote should identify the standard used, the allowed chemistry or certificate language, and whether the same finish, CNC machining and inspection plan will apply to both directions.
