What Materials Are Commonly Used for Die Cast Aluminum Parts?

Common materials for die cast aluminum parts include A380, ADC12, A360 and A413 material directions. A380 is widely used for general aluminum die cast housings, covers, brackets and equipment parts. ADC12 is common in supply chains that use Japanese or Asian die casting standards. A360 may be reviewed for selected corrosion or pressure-related needs. A413 may be reviewed for fluidity-sensitive parts or certain leak-sensitive applications. If part function depends on alloy behavior, A360 aluminum die casting helps separate strength, castability, machining and finish concerns.

These materials are selected for high pressure die casting behavior, not only for data-sheet strength. Die cast aluminum material must fill the die, solidify consistently, release from tooling, accept trimming, support CNC machining and meet finish requirements. Buyers should choose material together with design, tooling and inspection planning.

A buyer should avoid sending an RFQ that only says "aluminum". That leaves the supplier to choose the alloy and may create quotes that are not comparable. If the drawing requires A380, ADC12 or another material, the requirement should be written clearly. If equivalents are allowed, the buyer should define approval rules. Why Wrought Aluminum Is Different

Buyers sometimes compare die cast aluminum material with 6061 or 6063. Wrought aluminum is common for CNC machining and extrusion, but it is not the same manufacturing route as HPDC. A CNC machined 6061 prototype can validate fit, but it does not prove die cast porosity, tooling marks, surface finish or production cost.

If the buyer plans to move from machined prototypes to die cast production, the material change should be part of validation. The production die cast alloy may have different weight, surface appearance, mechanical behavior and machining response. The sample plan should identify what the prototype proves and what still needs to be validated in die casting.

This distinction is important for RFQ comparison. A 6061 CNC prototype price, an A380 die casting price and an ADC12 production quote are different manufacturing routes. Buyers should not treat them as the same material decision. The quote should identify whether the supplier is pricing a prototype, a pilot run or repeat production tooling.

How Material Affects Finished Parts

Material affects finished parts through machining, coating and inspection. A gasket face may expose pores after CNC machining. A powder coated surface may show pinholes or flow marks if the casting surface is not controlled. A material certificate may be required for customer approval. The buyer should define these needs before choosing material.

For repeat orders, the approved material should be tied to the drawing revision and inspection plan. If a supplier changes material direction later, the buyer should approve the change in writing. Material control protects both quality and commercial comparison.

Material can also affect surface finish. Painting and powder coating may work well when pretreatment and masking are defined, while decorative anodizing on die cast aluminum needs extra caution. If appearance matters, material approval should include a finished sample.

Buyer Material Selection Actions

Buyers should ask suppliers to name the assumed alloy, explain why it fits the part, state allowed equivalents, and identify what documents will be supplied. They should also mark machined features, pressure-sensitive areas and cosmetic surfaces. These actions give the supplier enough information to recommend a material that fits production. The material decision should be checked against A413 aluminum die casting when casting route, surface finish or production risk depends on the grade.

They should also connect material with production stage. A prototype may use a temporary route, but production should use the approved die cast material and documented inspection plan. If the buyer approves a CNC prototype first, the later die cast material still needs its own trial and first article review.

Common approval evidence may include material record, first article inspection, CMM report, thread gauge check, coating sample and leak test when needed. The evidence should match the part's function, not a generic checklist copied from another project.

Buyers should also ask what will happen if material availability changes. If an equivalent is proposed later, it should be reviewed against the same machining, finish and inspection requirements that were used for the approved sample.

That keeps later batches technically consistent.
