Buyer answer

Newway can be asked to quote anodizing to a named MIL or AMS specification, but compliance cannot be confirmed generically. It must be verified for the exact specification and revision, Type/Class, alloy, processing facility, accreditation or customer-approval requirement, tests and certificate package. The written quotation should identify what Newway performs, what is subcontracted and which evidence will accompany the shipment.

Pass four separate compliance gates

Gate

Question

Evidence before award

Technical scope

Can the proposed line process this alloy, geometry, Type/Class, thickness, seal and color?

Scope statement, comparable qualification data and trial plan

Facility qualification

Does the actual processor hold every required accreditation or approval?

Current certificate/scope and facility identity

Contract flow-down

Are drawing revision, tests, records and change controls passed to all processors?

Purchase-order review and subcontract control

Lot acceptance

Will this production lot be inspected and documented as required?

Inspection plan, laboratory scope, certificate template and traceability

Passing one gate does not pass the others. Owning an anodizing line does not prove customer approval. A quality-system certificate does not prove a special-process scope. A first article does not replace lot tests. A certificate statement is meaningful only when the underlying records satisfy the contract.

Define the exact requirement

"MIL anodize" and "AMS anodize" are incomplete requests. Provide the controlled specification and revision, Type/Class or process designation, alloy and temper, coating thickness, sealing, dye/color, coating and masking zones, rack restrictions, dimensions after finish, tests, sampling, certificate wording and records retention.

MIL-PRF-8625 and AMS process specifications do not share one interchangeable classification system. An engineering authority should resolve any drawing that cites conflicting Types, thicknesses or process documents. Newway's anodizing service quotation should repeat the accepted callout rather than paraphrase it.

Confirm the actual processing site

Special processes are frequently subject to customer-approved source lists, aerospace accreditation or program-specific approval. Requirements vary. Ask for the name and address of the site that will anodize the parts, its current approved scope, expiration or surveillance status where applicable, and whether the selected Type and tests are included.

If Newway coordinates an outside approved processor, the quote should identify that arrangement and preserve lot traceability. Subcontracting is not inherently noncompliant; undisclosed or uncontrolled subcontracting is the risk. Define who reviews certificates, controls drawing revisions, authorizes process changes and owns corrective action.

Align testing with the governing document

Potential acceptance items include coating thickness or mass, sealing quality, corrosion, abrasion, color, visual condition and finished dimensions. The required set depends on the specification, Type/Class and purchaser options. Do not add generic tests and call the package compliant; follow the selected document.

Identify whether tests are performed in-house or by an external laboratory and whether the contract requires laboratory accreditation. Confirm method revision, equipment range, calibration, specimen source, frequency and acceptance value. The available inspection equipment page may start a capability discussion, but project acceptance needs a written test plan.

When production parts cannot serve as standard test specimens, define process-control panels or representative coupons according to the governing requirement. Coupons do not necessarily prove coating distribution in deep holes, threads or die-cast recesses, so add part measurements where function requires them.

Specify the shipment documentation

A certificate of conformance should identify purchase order, drawing/revision, part and lot, quantity, alloy record as required, processor, specification/revision, Type/Class, deviations and authorized signatures. Attach actual test reports when the contract requires them. State whether raw data, bath records, calibration or traveler records must be retained and for how long.

Material traceability must survive casting or machining, cleaning, masking, anodizing, sealing, inspection and packaging. If parts are split between racks or baths, define whether those groups become separate process lots. A single shipment certificate should not conceal multiple untraceable process conditions.

First article and change control

Use production-intent alloy, machining, surface preparation, rack method, bath line, dye/seal and inspection for first article. Check finished dimensions and assembly in addition to coating tests. Approve visual ranges with enough samples to represent alloy and process variation.

Define notification triggers: processor or line change, alloy/source change, casting-process change, pretreatment, dye, seal, masking, rack orientation, test method or laboratory. The customer decides which changes require requalification. This prevents a previously compliant result from being assumed after its process basis changes.

RFQ checklist

  • Specification and revision, Type/Class or exact AMS process callout.

  • Alloy, temper/product form, drawing revision and annual/lot volume.

  • Thickness, seal, color, surface preparation, masking and rack restrictions.

  • Finished dimensions, threads, contacts, cosmetic zones and acceptance samples.

  • Tests, frequency, specimen source, laboratory/accreditation requirements and acceptance values.

  • Approved-source, customer audit, first-article and change-notification requirements.

  • Certificate, test reports, traceability, record-retention and packaging requirements.

Buyer answer

Ask Newway for a line-by-line compliance matrix and a written statement of processor and test scope. Resolve every exception before order placement. If a required accreditation or customer approval is absent, Newway may still be able to coordinate a qualified external source, but that route must be disclosed and accepted.

Therefore, Newway's ability to provide MIL- or AMS-compliant anodizing is a project-specific verification, not an unconditional website promise. Compliance is established when the named facility processes the controlled part to the named specification and the required lot evidence passes. Procurement should award only after those facts are documented.
