Commercial cross-reference tables do not prove LM6 and A413 interchangeability because they usually show family similarity, not complete specification identity. A one-line entry may omit the standard revision, casting process, every elemental limit, impurity totals, property condition, test method and whether the word "equivalent" means similar use or contractually interchangeable material.

LM6 is associated with the British BS 1490 system, while A413 is commonly specified through North American die-casting and ASTM B85 practice. The correct purchasing statement after seeing them on the same table is "A413 is a comparison candidate for the LM6 requirement," not "LM6 equals A413." Approval still requires controlled source documents, actual melt evidence and a part-specific decision.

What a Commercial Cross-Reference Entry Actually Proves

Family similarity is the first screening level. Both directions use a relatively high silicon content to support fluidity and castability. That explains why buyers see them next to AlSi12 or EN AC-44300 in cross-reference tables. It does not align iron, copper, magnesium, manganese, zinc, nickel, tin, lead, titanium, individual impurities or total impurities.

Specification conformance is stricter. Obtain the current standards invoked by the drawing and quote. Compare each minimum, range and maximum in one matrix and identify the product or process scope. Do not compare a supplier's nominal LM6 target with the full allowable A413 range or combine data from different standard revisions.

Nearby pages for AlSi12 and other high-silicon designations are useful orientation, but a shared family description is not a chain of legal or engineering equivalence. The drawing owner must decide which exact composition envelope and process state are acceptable.

Read commercial cross-reference tables as indexes. Record the publisher, page title, issue date, designation spelling and any footnote before using the entry. Then replace each shortcut with the controlled standards invoked by the drawing and quotation. If the official limits conflict with the cross-reference, the official purchase requirement wins.

Also distinguish an alloy substitution from a supply substitution. Two A413 sources can target different positions within the same permitted chemistry window and use different melt controls. Approval of one traceable source does not necessarily approve every source bearing the same designation. Source and process boundaries belong in the decision record.

The highest-risk omissions are the standard revision, full iron and copper maxima, individual and total residual limits, permitted casting process, mechanical-property condition and any note restricting the comparison to similar applications. A table that shows only "LM6 - A413 - AlSi12" gives no evidence that one compliant lot fits all three specifications.

Verify the Proposed Lot and Casting Route

A standard comparison still does not prove the supplied parts. Request the proposed source's target chemistry and a traceable report for the sample melt. The report should identify the designation, governing specification, heat or melt, measured elements and the parts represented. A certificate of conformity that repeats “A413” without actual results has a different evidentiary scope.

Confirm the casting route used for property and process claims. LM6 data from sand or gravity casting should not be placed beside pressure-die-cast A413 data as if chemistry alone caused every difference. Specimen form, section, porosity, thermal history, test method and condition need to be comparable. Otherwise label the values as screening information.

The same discipline applies to corrosion, machining and finish. Low copper intent may be important, but the application still includes fluid, chloride, crevices and dissimilar-metal contact. High silicon may support fluidity, but a thin wall still depends on gate, venting and process window. Anodizing or coating appearance needs an actual cast-surface trial.

Approve an Alternative With a Controlled Record

Consider a hypothetical enclosure drawing that calls for LM6 while a supplier offers A413 for local availability. If the part is noncritical and the drawing permits approved equivalents, engineering compares standards and actual chemistry, then checks dimensions, machining, finish and assembly. If the requirement is customer-mandated or tied to pressure, corrosion or load, the approval depth increases or substitution may be prohibited.

The record should state material source, standard revision, chemistry evidence, casting process, sample drawing, validation results and limits of approval. It should also name changes that require revalidation. A later source with a wider impurity target is not covered merely because it also sells A413.
