Buyers should preserve a sandblasted master sample in clean, dry, non-contact packaging with traceable part revision, blasting route, approval date and surface zones. Its evaluated face must be protected from fingerprints, abrasion, oil, oxidation and packaging transfer. Replacement should occur through a documented side-by-side approval, not by silently selecting a recent production part.
A master is a comparison standard, not permanent evidence. Bare aluminum and other blasted metals can change during storage, so condition checks and retained boundary samples are necessary.
Use a durable tag, controlled container and quality record that identify part number, drawing revision, casting condition, media family/grade where controlled, process route, visual class, approval parties and date. Marking should be on a non-evaluated location and must not transfer ink, adhesive or corrosion products to the master face.
Photographs help identify the approved sample but cannot replace it because camera exposure, white balance and screens change appearance. Numerical roughness records can support identity but cannot reconstruct gloss or texture scale.

Support the part at non-cosmetic features so the evaluated surface does not rub. Use clean, compatible materials that do not shed fibers, outgas plasticizer, trap moisture or leave imprint. Operators should use clean gloves and lift by approved contact points. Do not wipe the texture with an unqualified cloth because the wipe can polish peaks or deposit lint.
Store in a stable dry area away from machining oil, chemical mist, sunlight and temperature cycles that cause condensation. If corrosion inhibitor is used, it becomes part of the delivered visual condition and must be approved; spraying an old master to “protect” it can invalidate comparison.
Inspect the master at planned intervals and before major approvals. Compare condition photographs, mapped roughness or gloss readings where meaningful, and an independently retained duplicate or boundary sample. Look for fingerprints, edge polish, oxidation, staining, dust embedded in texture and packaging marks.
Do not clean a suspected master until its condition is documented. Cleaning can restore loose dust but may also change the surface. The disposition can be retain, qualified cleaning, downgrade to training reference or replace. A damaged master should be clearly marked against production use.

Produce replacement candidates under the existing approved process and compare them with the original, boundary samples and recent conforming production under the same viewing conditions. Review mapped roughness and gloss only as supporting data. If candidates cannot match because casting or blasting conditions changed, treat the event as a process change, not routine master renewal.
Approval should record why replacement was required, which candidate was selected, differences from the old sample, effective date and disposition of the retired master. Retain the old sample in a clearly labeled historical status when its condition still provides useful evidence. The sand blasting supplier and buyer should each control the same master identity or approved duplicates.
If the delivered part receives clear coat, powder or paint, that complete finish needs its own master. Coating changes color, gloss and the visibility of substrate texture. The bare blasted master remains an intermediate process reference, while the finished master releases the delivered appearance. Record the relationship between the two so a change in substrate preparation cannot be hidden by coating variation.
The post-process quality plan should state who owns each master, where it is stored and which one controls final acceptance. For long programs, duplicate masters stored separately reduce the risk that one damaged sample resets years of visual history.
At least one duplicate should remain untouched by daily inspection and be accessed only for audits, disputes or replacement approval. Comparing the working master with this reference can reveal gradual handling wear before production acceptance drifts.
A master remains useful only while its identity and physical condition are protected. Controlled storage, periodic checks and a side-by-side replacement process prevent gradual appearance drift from becoming the new undocumented standard.
