Two sandblasted parts can have similar Ra but different appearance because Ra averages profile deviations and does not fully describe peak shape, valley depth, directional lay, texture scale, gloss, color or isolated marks. Media shape and size, cast skin, particle breakdown, nozzle direction and viewing light can change visual response while the arithmetic average remains close.

Buyers should use Ra as one process-control signal, then control cosmetic acceptance with a defined physical master or a validated visual and gloss method. A numerical match is not permission to accept streaks, mixed texture or local overblast.

What Ra Averages and What It Hides

Ra is calculated from the absolute profile deviations around a mean line over a defined evaluation length. A surface with many moderate peaks can return a value close to a surface with fewer sharp peaks and deeper valleys. Rz or a retained profile trace may expose that difference, but each still needs a stated standard, instrument, cutoff, filter and location.

How Media Shape and Size Change Visual Scale

Rounded bead tends to indent or peen, while angular abrasive tends to cut. Those are tendencies rather than guarantees. A coarse rounded medium can create a larger visual texture than a fine angular medium, and fractured beads can introduce sharp fine impacts. Two routes can converge on similar Ra while producing different peak geometry and light scattering.

Media size distribution also affects mottling. A narrow distribution can produce a more consistent impact scale, while a mixture of intact and fractured particles can create fine and coarse texture together. The specialty media blasting route should therefore control actual media condition, not only the original bag label.

Why Cast Skin and Directional Lay Matter

Cast skin can vary between flow regions, trimmed areas, local repairs and machined islands. Blasting may blend reflectivity without removing the underlying topography equally. Nozzle sweep and part orientation can leave directional overlap or shadow boundaries. A stylus trace parallel to this lay can return a different result from a perpendicular trace.

Specify trace direction when directionality is possible. If the surface is expected to be isotropic, include a visual prohibition on streaks and a multi-direction confirmation during qualification. Do not average a bright repaired patch and a normal cast field into one acceptable number.

How Lighting, Gloss and Viewing Distance Change Judgment

Directional light emphasizes peaks and sweep marks; diffuse light can make the same part appear more uniform. Viewing distance changes which texture scale is visible. A final cosmetic standard should state light source or approved booth, part orientation, distance, viewing time and whether the observer compares directly with a master.

What a Buyer Should Put on the Drawing

State the surface zone, Ra or Rz only when functionally justified, the complete measurement method and locations, the cosmetic master reference, allowed variation and prohibited local defects. If the part will be coated, specify whether the requirement applies before or after the finish. A powder-coated surface should be judged against the final coated master, not the intermediate blasted sample.

During first article, retain raw traces and photographs from the same identified parts. That pairing helps engineering decide whether later visual drift came from profile shape, media contamination, cast-surface change or inspection conditions. The sand blasting service should return both numerical and visual evidence when both are acceptance requirements.

How to Investigate an Ra Pass With an Appearance Failure

Hold the part under the approved lighting and map the visual condition before taking additional traces. Compare Rz or raw profiles inside and outside the affected zone, then review nozzle sweep, fixture shadow, media age, cast lot and local repair history. Measure gloss or color only if those methods were qualified for the finish. Do not keep searching the part for a favorable Ra location.

If the affected region follows one cavity or casting-flow area, preserve unblasted controls and review substrate variation. If it follows the blast path, equipment or operator direction becomes more credible. The disposition should identify which standard failed and what process control changes, even when the average roughness remains acceptable.

Similar Ra values can support process comparison, but they do not establish cosmetic equivalence. Buyers obtain repeatable appearance by combining a defined roughness method with controlled viewing, surface zones and a stable master.
