How Should Buyers Define an Auto Diecasting RFQ for Automotive Aluminum Parts?

Buyers should define an auto diecasting RFQ around the finished automotive part, not only the casting blank. The package should identify the controlling 3D model and 2D drawing, revision and units, material or material constraints, functional interfaces, critical-to-quality features, forecast and order pattern, tooling scope, machining, finish, testing, inspection, packaging and approval authority. This lets suppliers quote the same deliverable and exposes assumptions before a die is designed.

The RFQ should also state what the sample must prove. A housing may need evidence for bore position, gasket flatness, wall integrity, corrosion protection and assembly fit. A bracket may need load-related geometry, mounting interfaces and distortion control. “Automotive quality” is not an acceptance criterion by itself. The requirement must be tied to a feature, a part state, a method and a project-defined limit.

Control the Geometry and Function Baseline

Start with one authoritative design package. A STEP or Parasolid model can support parting, draft, gate, slide and machining-stock review, while the drawing or MBD data defines datums, tolerances, threads, sealing faces, surface requirements and notes. State which file controls if the model, PDF and spreadsheet disagree. Include mating components or interface dimensions where they determine the casting envelope.

Mark the features that cannot move during DFM. Typical examples are locating bores, bearing seats, gasket lands, bolt patterns, connector openings, grounding areas and thermal-contact faces. Also identify visible surfaces, gate- or ejector-mark restrictions and zones where flash would interfere with assembly. The supplier can then distinguish an acceptable design improvement from a change that weakens the automotive function.

Material information belongs beside the geometry. Name A380, ADC12, A356 or another specified grade when the choice is known, including the governing standard and delivered condition where applicable. If the grade is open, list the constraints that keep it open, such as corrosion exposure, machining, pressure tightness, thermal duty, weight or a required property test. A proposed substitute should be a documented approval question, not a silent quotation assumption.

Make Volume and Finished Scope Comparable

Separate launch quantity, pilot quantity, normal order lot, annual forecast, peak demand and expected program duration. These numbers influence tooling economics, cavity strategy, capacity planning, sampling and packaging. If the forecast is uncertain, label it as a planning range rather than presenting a speculative figure as a firm order commitment.

Do not compare a casting-only quote with a finished-part quote. State whether the supplier is responsible for trimming, machining, deburring, surface treatment, cleaning, leak or function tests, dimensional reports and protective packaging. For a supplier that also handles the metal casting route, ask for a line-by-line scope and an assumption register so excluded operations are visible.

Specify the Validation and Approval Package

Define the sample stage and the evidence attached to it. A first trial may answer whether the tool fills and ejects; a machined sample may answer interface fit; a finished sample may answer coating, leak or appearance; and a pilot lot may answer handoff and repeatability questions. Do not treat a visually acceptable first shot as production approval.

The RFQ should name the required measurement state. Dimensions may apply as-cast, after trimming, after CNC machining, after coating or after assembly. Identify CMM, gauges, thread checks, surface checks, material records or internal-quality examination only where they answer a defined risk. The testing equipment overview can support a discussion of possible methods, but equipment availability is not evidence that a particular part has passed.

A practical RFQ ends with open decisions and owners. List unresolved alloy, tooling, gate, machining, coating, test and packaging questions, then state when each must be closed. Require the supplier to return DFM comments, a process assumption list, a proposed evidence plan and a commercial breakdown. The aluminum die casting service can then be evaluated against the same requirements as competing routes.

The buyer's final check is whether another engineer could read the RFQ and understand the part, delivered condition, demand pattern and release evidence without a private explanation. If not, the package is not ready for comparable auto diecasting quotations.

It is also useful to separate buyer requirements from supplier optimization space. A gate may move within an agreed nonfunctional zone, a rib transition may be adjusted to improve filling, and a fixture support may change without changing the product interface. Those options should be marked as negotiable, while sealing lands, bore relationships, thread locations and material requirements remain controlled. This gives the supplier room to improve manufacturability without turning a DFM suggestion into an unapproved product change.

For a first quotation, ask for the proposed route, included operations, major tooling assumptions, sample stages and evidence deliverables in the same response. The result should show what is priced, what is still open and what decision the buyer must make next. That structure is more useful than a single unit price for an auto diecasting program.
