What Information Is Needed to Quote Die Cast Aluminum Material?

To quote die cast aluminum material correctly, buyers should provide 3D CAD, 2D drawings, preferred material or open recommendation, equivalent material rules, quantity, annual volume, application environment, critical machined features, surface finish, inspection requirements and delivery target. Questions to Ask Before Approving Material

Buyers should ask which material is assumed, why it is recommended, whether equivalents are allowed, whether material records can be supplied, and how the material affects machining, finish and inspection. If the supplier proposes a change from A380 to ADC12 or from ADC12 to another direction, the buyer should understand the reason before approval.

Buyers should also ask whether the first article will prove the finished condition. A die cast sample without machining and coating may not prove the material's behavior in the final part. If the buyer needs a machined gasket face and powder coating, the sample approval should include those steps.

The buyer should ask whether the quote includes trial corrections related to material or casting behavior. If a machined face shows porosity or a coating sample reveals pinholes, the supplier may need to adjust tooling, process settings or design details. The quote should explain how such corrections are handled.

Revision Control and Material Records

Revision control matters because a design change can change material risk. A thicker boss may increase porosity. A new coating requirement may change finish approval. A new customer standard may change material documentation. Quotes should be tied to the active drawing revision.

Material records should match the material used for production samples. If the buyer approves A380 but later receives another equivalent, the change should be documented. This is especially important when the buyer's customer audits material or when the part enters long-term repeat supply.

For repeat orders, the approved material should be tied to the drawing revision and inspection plan. If the buyer later changes finish, machined features or annual volume, the material assumption may need to be reviewed again.

Finished Scope for Material Quotes

Material quotes should state whether they include raw casting only, CNC machining, coating, inspection and packaging. A low price for raw A380 castings may not compete with a finished ADC12 part quote. Buyers should align scope before comparing prices.

The RFQ should also identify production stage. Prototype samples, pilot batches and long-term production may use different approval evidence. For production, the buyer should request material record, first article report and any finish or functional test needed for release.

If the project is a redesign of an existing die cast part, buyers should include old drawings, failed sample photos or previous quality issues. This helps the supplier understand whether material, design, tooling, machining or finishing caused the old problem.

Buyers should also include customer-specific restrictions such as approved material lists, coating standards, RoHS-related requirements or required report format. These restrictions can decide whether an equivalent material is acceptable.
