Remove loose coating and corrosion products until sound substrate and firmly bonded film are visible, then classify the damage before choosing a repair. A local scratch with intact surrounding adhesion may accept a qualified touch-up. Blistering, widespread underfilm creep, deep pitting, cracking, galvanic attack or contamination beneath the film requires root-cause investigation and may require stripping, recoating or part rejection.
Never apply paint directly over white corrosion products, moisture or a lifting edge. The new film may look acceptable while active corrosion continues underneath. The repair must restore cleaning, pretreatment, primer or conversion layer and topcoat functions as far as the approved system requires, not only match color.
Record damage location, size, depth, coating layers, nearby fasteners, gasket or crevice, drainage, chloride or chemical exposure and whether bare aluminum contacts another metal. Photograph the untouched condition with scale before cleaning. If corrosion begins repeatedly at one edge or screw, treat geometry or galvanic contact as a system problem rather than random handling damage.
Clean by a method compatible with the substrate and coating. Aggressive grinding can remove sound wall or embed steel contamination. Excessive blasting can round a gasket edge and enlarge the repair. The work instruction should define tools, media, feathering distance, solvent or cleaner, rinse, drying and acceptance of the exposed aluminum.
Measure remaining section or pit depth when load, sealing or pressure boundary could be affected. Coating repair does not restore lost aluminum. A crack, through-wall pit, distorted seal land or attack around an insert needs engineering disposition before any cosmetic work.

Use repair materials and layer sequence approved for the original film. A factory powder coating may require a compatible liquid repair because local powder recure is impractical; compatibility, appearance and performance still need qualification. A liquid painting system may have a defined primer and topcoat repair process, but mix ratio, flash, film and cure remain controlled.
Restore pretreatment where the aluminum is exposed. The approved procedure should state how local conversion or primer is applied and rinsed or dried without damaging surrounding film. Do not substitute an unknown aerosol because its color matches. Verify shelf life, batch, application temperature and overlap onto sound coating.
Control the feather edge. A hard ridge can trap water, interfere with a seal or become the next chip line. A bare halo between original and repair film becomes an anodic site. Mask only where needed and remove residue from threads, gasket lands and grounding pads.
Consider a hypothetical outdoor enclosure with a powder-coated edge chipped during installation. Inspection finds shallow local exposure and firm surrounding adhesion, but the edge is sharp and contacts a steel bracket. The team isolates the metals, rounds future parts within drawing control, cleans and locally pretreats the current zone, then applies the qualified repair coating. Simply covering the chip would not address recurrence.
Inspect repair coverage, cure, adhesion where the method permits, dimensions and appearance. For severe exposure, qualify repaired specimens in a relevant cyclic or scribed corrosion test. Do not claim that a passing touch-up has the same life as an undamaged factory coating unless the test plan supports that specific conclusion.
Set a maximum repair count and area. Several small touch-ups close together can create one large transition zone with uncertain adhesion and water paths. Repairs on opposite sides of a thin wall may also add heat or solvent exposure. The drawing owner should define which zones prohibit repair, such as seal tracks, high-load interfaces, electrical contacts or pressure boundaries.
Inspect after the repair has reached its specified cure, not while the film is only dry to touch. Check color and gloss under the agreed viewing condition, but keep cosmetic acceptance separate from corrosion protection. A visually blended spot can still have poor edge sealing or insufficient primer.
