An as-cast tolerance is the permitted dimensional variation of an aluminum sand-cast part before planned machining, coating, or other finishing. It applies to the surfaces formed by the mold, pattern, cores, parting line, and metal solidification. It is not the same as a finished machined tolerance. The correct limit depends on part size, geometry, draft, core support, section changes, mold condition, alloy, measurement datum, and the function of the feature.
For a buyer, the important question is which surfaces are expected to remain as cast. An exterior cover face may accept a different variation from a gasket land, bearing seat, locating pad, or cored passage. If a face will be machined, the drawing should define the cast envelope and the stock needed to clean it. The aluminum sand-casting route should be reviewed with the final part drawing, not with one generic tolerance table.
Sand casting forms a surface against a pattern or core, so the result includes mold texture, draft, parting alignment, core movement, shrinkage, and local metal variation. Machining can create a more controlled interface from a stable datum, but only if the casting contains enough material and can be fixtured without distortion. A tight final requirement may therefore belong to a machined face, while a surrounding as-cast feature needs a wider and explicitly conditioned limit.
A buyer should not tighten every dimension on the raw casting. That can increase tooling effort, inspection cost, and rejection without improving the product. Instead, separate cosmetic, clearance, sealing, structural, and machining surfaces. State the part condition, measurement direction, datum, and inspection method for each group. If the supplier needs to use a pattern or core change to meet a local requirement, that change should be visible in the quote.

As-cast dimensions should be measured from datums that can be located repeatedly on the actual part. A rough edge, flash line, or flexible wall may not be a stable datum for a functional interface. The drawing should identify whether a datum is as cast, machined, or established by a fixture. If machining is part of the delivery, transfer the datum chain from the casting to the finished part and identify where the stock is removed.
Core features need special care. An internal bore can be round at one section and shifted at another. A measurement at one end may hide a position problem along the length. Cross-sections, coordinate measurements, or a finished bore check may be more useful than a single outside dimension. Choose the method with the design owner and record the section or station checked.
A useful acceptance rule states the feature, condition, location, datum, method, and consequence of failure. It should say whether the measurement is taken after shakeout, trimming, cleaning, machining, or coating. For pressure or structural features, dimensional approval does not replace the relevant leak, load, or material inspection. A casting can meet a broad envelope and still fail because a pore, thin spot, or machined interface affects the function.
The practical answer is conditional: an as-cast tolerance is the limit that the selected pattern, mold, core, alloy, and inspection method can support for a named surface. Keep it separate from final machined tolerance and specify the evidence needed for both.

When a dimension is difficult to measure directly, explain how it will be controlled rather than hiding it in a general note. A repeatable section location, a scanning plan, or an agreed checking fixture can make the result clearer. Recheck the affected locations after a pattern, core, parting, or machining change.
As-cast acceptance should also distinguish an isolated local mark from a dimensional trend. A small burr at a trimmed gate may be removed before measurement, while a shift in a core or parting surface changes the actual geometry. Document cleaning and trimming before inspection so the measurement represents the delivered casting state. If a feature is later machined, retain the raw measurement as evidence of the starting envelope.
For repeat production, keep the tolerance note with the pattern revision, core revision, alloy designation, and inspection plan. A change in any of these inputs can make an earlier as-cast value incomparable. This record helps the buyer decide whether a reported deviation needs a tooling correction, a machining change, or an engineering review.
