Yes, samples can be submitted for trial anodizing and quotation evaluation, subject to project review and an agreed trial scope. Samples are especially useful for cast aluminum, unknown incoming surfaces, new colors, tight cosmetic requirements or difficult masking. A trial should not be treated as a free production promise: identify the alloy, manufacturing route, finish specification, tests, sample ownership and acceptance criteria first. The resulting price applies only to the conditions represented by the approved samples.

Send the drawing, 3D model, material designation and condition, manufacturing route, current surface preparation, target anodizing process, film range, color/seal, masked features, service exposure and expected quantities. Mark controlled fits, cosmetic zones, acceptable rack contacts and measurement locations. This review identifies whether the samples can answer the question or whether required information is missing.

Photographs help show incoming appearance but do not confirm alloy, contamination, porosity or dimensional condition. If material identity is uncertain, agree how it will be verified and who pays for analysis. A finishing trial on an unidentified sample can show one outcome, but it cannot establish a repeatable production baseline.

Submit enough pieces to cover destructive tests, process setup and an untreated retain sample. If several cavities, material lots or surface conditions exist, label them. The supplier should not choose the best-looking pieces and silently exclude difficult variants.

Define the trial matrix before processing

A useful trial changes one controlled factor at a time. That might be pretreatment, mechanical texture, anodizing Type, color or sealing. If several variables change together, the samples may show a preferred appearance but not why it occurred. Record sample ID, incoming condition, rack/contact location, process option and inspection result.

Mechanical preparation such as sand blasting can be included when texture is part of the candidate route. It should not be added without approval because it changes roughness and edge definition. Likewise, CNC machining changes the surface and may expose pores in castings. Sequence is evidence, not a detail to omit.

Agree who processes and tests the samples

Confirm whether the trial uses intended production equipment and chemistry or a development route. A successful laboratory coupon does not automatically qualify another finishing line.

Tests should come from the drawing or trial objective. Visual color, film measurement, final dimensions, sealing, corrosion or wear are separate characteristics. State method, revision, location, sample count and pass/fail limit. Do not request every possible test by habit; that raises trial cost without necessarily improving the decision.

Price the trial and production separately

The quotation should show engineering review, fixture/contact development, sample processing, color work, masking, destructive pieces, inspection/reporting, packaging and freight. State whether a portion is credited against production, whether repeated trials are included and who pays after a customer requirement changes. Trial lead time depends on sample readiness, processor schedule, color development, tests and external approvals, so it should be confirmed in the actual quote rather than assumed.

Then request a production estimate at realistic release quantities. The processor can use demonstrated rack density, cycle, inspection time and visual outcome instead of broad risk allowance. Note any remaining unknowns, such as production-tool casting variation or a second material source.

Turn approved samples into controlled evidence

A signed cosmetic master should identify alloy, surface preparation, finish route, date and approval conditions. Store it to prevent handling or light/contamination changes. Photographs can support location records but should not replace the physical reference unless a validated digital method exists.

Production control must also capture functional requirements. Lock the drawing revision, material, manufacturing sequence, processor, rack/contact plan, masking, process option, color/seal, inspection and change triggers. An approved trial does not cover a later alloy substitution, polished surface replacing blasted texture, new cavity, different finisher or tighter color requirement.
