How Should Machined Castings Be Inspected Before Shipment?

Machined castings should be inspected before shipment by checking casting condition, machined dimensions, threads, holes, bores, flatness, datum relationships, surface finish, coating or masking, burrs, cleanliness, assembly fit and packaging protection. The inspection must match the final delivery condition, not only the raw casting or the part before finishing.

A machined casting can fail for several reasons. The raw casting may have pores near a sealing face. The CNC operation may cut a bore out of alignment. A thread may pass before coating and fail after coating. A finished visible surface may be scratched during packing. Inspection should therefore cover the full path from casting blank to packed component.

The final report should show actual values, drawing revision, datum setup and instrument. CMM is appropriate for positional and geometric relationships, thread gauges for fastening features, and functional fixtures for repeated assembly checks. Pressure or leak testing should be performed after final machining when sealing faces can expose porosity.

The shipment plan should tie each feature to a method and frequency. ASME Y14.5 or ISO 1101 can define datums and geometric controls, while ISO 21920 can define machined surface texture. A CMM report is appropriate for positional relationships; GO/NO-GO thread and plug gauges are faster for production checks. If statistical capability is requested, state the characteristic, sample size and acceptance value, commonly Cpk 1.33 only after the process is stable, rather than asking for an undefined capability report.

Raw Casting Check Before Machining

Inspection should begin before CNC machining when the casting condition can affect finished quality. Raw casting checks may include flash, burrs, surface defects, warpage, parting line mismatch, gate removal, visible pores and stock on critical machining areas. This step prevents time from being spent machining castings that cannot become acceptable parts.

For sealing faces, the supplier should check whether defects are likely to appear after machining. For bosses, the supplier should confirm there is enough wall after drilling or tapping. For castings with multiple datums, the supplier should check whether the blank can sit repeatably in the fixture.

Machined Feature Inspection

Machined feature inspection should match the feature type. Threads should be checked with go/no-go gauges. Bores should be checked for diameter, roundness and sometimes position. Sealing faces should be checked for flatness and roughness. Dowel holes should be checked for location. Datum surfaces should be inspected in relation to the drawing requirement.

Not every feature needs CMM inspection, but complex parts with relationships across several faces often do. A caliper may be enough for a non-critical overall dimension. A CMM or dedicated fixture may be needed when holes, bores and faces must align with mating parts. The inspection method should be agreed before production.

Finish and Burr Control

Machined castings often need deburring and finish checks before shipment. Burrs around holes, threads, edges and milled faces can interfere with assembly or cut wires, seals and hands during handling. The drawing or purchase order should define whether edges need simple deburring, controlled chamfers or tighter edge break requirements.

Finish inspection should include coating coverage, masking, color, gloss, surface defects and coating thickness when required. If a coating touches threads or bores, post-finish gauges may be needed. If a surface is cosmetic, the inspection standard should define allowable scratches, pits, pores, flow marks and handling marks.

Packaging Inspection Before Shipment

Packaging is part of shipment inspection for machined castings. A part can pass every dimension and still be rejected if machined faces are dented, coated surfaces are scratched or threads are contaminated during transit. Protective packing should match part weight, surface finish and feature sensitivity.

Finished parts with machined faces may need separators, caps, thread protection, foam, bags, trays or custom cartons. Heavy castings should not be allowed to hit each other in transit. If the buyer uses automated assembly, labels and orientation may also matter.

Sample Approval vs Shipment Inspection

Sample approval and shipment inspection are related but different. Sample approval proves that the selected route can make an acceptable part. Shipment inspection proves that the delivered batch still follows that approved route. Buyers should keep the approved sample, drawing revision, finish standard and inspection checklist connected to the shipment record.

For repeat orders, shipment inspection should focus on features that can drift: tool wear on bores, tap quality in threads, fixture location on datum-controlled holes, coating thickness on masked areas and handling marks on finished surfaces. These checks protect the buyer from accepting a batch that slowly moved away from the first article standard.
