Repeat orders for Zamak 5 should be supported by an ASTM AC41A material specification, a lot-specific chemistry certificate, melt or heat identification, a link between that material lot and the shipped casting lot, and documented approval for any equivalent grade or source change. Because Zamak 5 is distinguished partly by its copper level, the report should provide actual chemistry values rather than only the words “zinc alloy” or “Zamak.”

Material records confirm alloy identity; they do not prove the finished component's dimensions, thread strength, wear life or plating appearance. Those results belong in the part control plan. The material package ensures that later orders of Zamak 5 / ASTM AC41A start from the same approved chemistry basis.

Which Fields Belong on the Chemistry Certificate?

The certificate should state the grade, governing standard and revision, actual results for aluminum, copper, magnesium and controlled impurities, melt or heat number, test source, analysis date and authorization. Common AC41A references place aluminum around 3.7-4.3% and copper around 0.75-1.25%, but the purchased standard and drawing control the exact limits.

Actual values help engineering assess a deviation and verify that the report belongs to Zamak 5 rather than a low-copper grade. If a report uses a local or supplier designation, it should cross-reference the approved AC41A requirement. A generic conformance statement may be accepted only when the buyer's specification explicitly allows it.

How the Melt Number Connects to Shipped Parts

The production traveler or electronic lot record should connect ingot or melt identity to casting date, machine or work order, part number, drawing revision and shipped quantity. The packing label or certificate of conformity then references that production lot. Individual part serialization is not always necessary, but an auditor should be able to start with a received carton and find the corresponding chemistry report.

If multiple melts enter one shipment, retain the quantity or date-code relationship. If internal returns are remelted, the process must still include chemistry control before release. Traceability is not the same as insisting on virgin metal; it is the ability to prove that every approved melt met AC41A requirements and entered identified production lots.

How Equivalent Grades Should Be Approved

Do not approve an equivalent from its commercial name alone. Compare full chemistry ranges and impurity limits across ASTM, EN, JIS or proprietary specifications. Review whether the proposed source changes mechanical-property direction, aging behavior, hot-chamber process settings, polishing or plating response. The zinc alloy grade range shows why several zinc grades cannot be treated as one interchangeable material.

The deviation should state the alternate grade and source, affected part numbers, evidence reviewed, validation required and authorization. For a loaded or wear-sensitive part, repeat the relevant functional test. For a decorative part, repeat finish approval on cast samples. A standing approved-source list is more reliable than reopening “or equivalent” during every purchase order.

Which Property Records May Accompany Chemistry?

A hardness or tensile coupon record can be added when the drawing or risk plan requires it. The method, specimen, sampling frequency and acceptance limit must be defined. Catalog property data is not a lot test. A coupon also cannot prove a local boss is free of porosity or that a sliding surface remains aligned.

Part-specific controls may include thread pullout, torque-out, wear cycles, dimensional conditioning or coating inspection. Keep these records linked to the same casting lot, but distinguish material identity from component performance. This separation makes corrective action more accurate when a finished part fails.

What Changes Should Trigger Reapproval?

Require notification for a new alloy source, alternate grade, substantial melt-control change, new casting location or any chemistry deviation. Tooling repair alone may not require material reapproval, but it can require dimensional or functional requalification. A new plater does not change AC41A identity, yet it should trigger finish approval where appearance or corrosion protection is controlled.

Material traceability expectations can be aligned with zinc casting traceability guidance. The repeat-order release checklist should match the certificate to the part lot, confirm the current source and grade, review deviations, and verify that required function and finish records are present.

An AC41A callout becomes reliable supply control only when chemistry, melt identity, casting lot, shipment and change approval form one traceable chain. Keeping that chain intact prevents later orders from relying on the memory that “the first batch was Zamak 5.”
