Buyers should approve cosmetic zones with a marked A/B/C surface map, an installed viewing direction, lighting and distance, a controlled color/texture master, zone-specific language for casting and finishing marks, a dimensioned transition-line band and a lot acceptance rule. Appearance approval must identify what is being judged and under which condition; an unqualified note such as "cosmetic surface" cannot produce repeatable decisions.

Functional criteria remain separate. A crack, cold shut, harmful porosity indication, loose coating, sharp burr or sealing-surface defect is not accepted because it falls in a low-visibility zone. The post-process approval uses the zone map for appearance while drawing, coating and assembly requirements continue to govern performance.

Approve Zones in the Installed Viewing Direction

An A-zone is normally the surface seen directly in expected use; a B-zone is visible at an angle or during handling; a C-zone is hidden after assembly or only exposed for service. Those labels are not universal severity levels. The drawing must show exact boundaries and state whether edges belong to the more visible adjacent zone. A housing can have an A-zone front bezel, B-zone sidewalls and C-zone underside without treating its internal sealing land as cosmetic at all.

Record the observation setup used for the approved master: viewing distance range, viewing angle or rotation, illumination type and intensity range if controlled, observation time, and whether the part is assembled. A defect visible only under magnification or grazing inspection light may not belong to ordinary cosmetic review unless the requirement says so. Conversely, a texture wave that becomes obvious in the installed orientation cannot be dismissed because it disappears under diffuse bench light.

Die cast parts carry process geography. Parting lines cross edges, gates leave local witnesses, ejector pins create circular or shaped marks, and local polishing or blasting can change texture around them. The design review should place or treat these features with the visible zones in mind. When they cannot be moved, the approval package needs exact language for residual height, depression, witness shape, texture difference and viewing visibility.

A supplier cannot reliably meet "no marks" on every cast surface, and a buyer should not accept unlimited process evidence simply because a part is die cast. Use annotated photographs or physical boundary samples to define borderline appearance. Identify whether each sample represents accept, reject or a specific limit. Digital images alone can shift color, scale and lighting, so they supplement rather than silently replace a retained physical master for critical appearance.

Lock Color and Texture to a Controlled Master

The master needs an identifier, finish system, substrate condition, approval date, viewing setup, storage method and replacement rule. Color plaques can help control coating batches, but a flat plaque does not reproduce die cast texture, edge build, recess coverage or local substrate variation. Retain representative finished parts when those effects influence acceptance. A surface finish reference can explain broad process families, while the project master governs the approved appearance for the actual part.

Masters age. Dirt, scratching, ultraviolet exposure and repeated handling can change the reference. Store them covered, define who can release them and compare duplicate masters at agreed intervals. When color, texture, alloy, pretreatment, coating source or cure condition changes, engineering decides whether the existing master remains representative. A purchasing substitution cannot automatically inherit appearance approval.

Treat Transition Lines as Measurable Visible Features

A transition line between coated and uncoated areas, two colors or two textures needs a nominal path and a permissible band. State the limit for waviness, overspray, feathering, bare overlap, torn film and coating shoulder. Reference the path to stable part geometry. At corners, show which surface owns the line; otherwise two inspectors may make opposite decisions from the same part.

Inspect line position with a template, optical method or defined dimensional check suited to the tolerance, then inspect edge quality under the agreed cosmetic condition. Color contrast can make a small positional shift more visible than the same shift between similar finishes. Transition acceptance therefore combines location and appearance rather than allowing one to vote out the other.

Approve a Controller Housing Lot Without Erasing Zone Differences

Consider a handheld controller housing whose front bezel is A-zone, side grip is B-zone and underside is C-zone. The parting line runs along the side edge, the gate witness lies under a battery cover and a masked connector opening creates a visible transition on the lower front. The approval set records the assembled viewing direction, retains a color/texture master part and marks the transition-line band from the connector-bore centerline.

Lot review first checks functional coating integrity and dimensions under their own rules. Cosmetic sampling then compares parts by zone, not by a single overall verdict. A recurring texture shadow at the same cavity location is trended separately from random handling scratches. If a borderline indication appears, the disposition authority uses the controlled master and defect language; the inspector does not create a new visual threshold at the bench.

Packaging preserves the approved condition. The secure packaging reference is relevant where separators, bags or contact points can polish, scuff or print the finished surface. Buyers should provide zone drawings, view conditions, master requirements, process-mark language, transition geometry and lot sampling. Suppliers should return the proposed inspection setup, master-control method, cavity or rack traceability where useful, and containment response for a drifting cosmetic signal.
