Yes. A coating-preparation profile should be inspected for compatibility with cleaning, pretreatment, coating adhesion, film distribution and service requirements. A final cosmetic blast finish should be inspected for visible texture, gloss, color uniformity, local defects and handling condition. Both may use roughness data, but their acceptance evidence and risk priorities are different.

If one surface must satisfy both objectives, buyers should approve the complete route against both sets of requirements rather than assuming one Ra range proves appearance and coating performance.

What Functional Profile Inspection Needs to Prove

The prepared surface must have the profile and cleanliness required by the selected coating system without excessive peaks, embedded media, oil or damaged geometry. Inspection may include Ra or Rz at defined points, residual-media checks, water-break or chemical-process controls where approved, conversion evidence and coating adhesion after cure. Service-specific corrosion or environmental tests may be needed during qualification.

Rougher is not automatically better. Deep valleys can retain abrasive or rinse chemistry, while high peaks can receive reduced film thickness. The chosen profile should be the qualified window for the named substrate and coating stack.

What Cosmetic Inspection Needs to Prove

A final bare blasted finish should match approved upper and lower appearance boundaries under specified light, distance, orientation and viewing time. Inspect A, B and C zones separately. Prohibited conditions can include streaks, blast shadows, mixed texture, local bright marks, fingerprints, oxidation stains, exposed repairs and inconsistent transitions.

Ra supports monitoring but cannot replace the master. A surface may pass Ra while showing directional overlap, and a visually acceptable surface may contain local roughness variation that is harmless for its cosmetic function. The drawing should state which rule controls when numerical and visual results disagree.

How the Finished Coating Changes Cosmetic Acceptance

When powder or wet paint follows blasting, the delivered cosmetic standard is the finished coating, not the bare profile. The film can hide fine texture, change gloss or emphasize larger blast tracks. Qualify the substrate extremes through the full powder coating or painting route and retain a final coated master.

Intermediate blasting still needs its functional controls because a beautiful final sample can hide retained media or a weak interface. Final appearance and hidden durability must both pass.

How to Handle a Surface That Has Both Objectives

Define a combined acceptance matrix. The blast process must meet profile, residue and geometry limits; the completed coating must meet film, adhesion, cure, appearance and service limits. Trial the allowable roughness extremes rather than only the center. A profile that passes adhesion but produces visible telegraphing may need a narrower window or a different coating build.

Where one component has bare decorative and coated zones, use a surface map and controlled masking sequence. Chemical pretreatment can alter the bare blasted appearance, while blasting after coating damages the film. The process route should show the final condition of every zone and transition.

What Buyers Should Request From a Finishing Supplier

Request the proposed blast objective, roughness method and locations, media-residue control, chemical preparation, coating system, film-thickness map, appearance-master method and production sampling. Ask which variables trigger requalification. The post-process supplier should explain how intermediate profile evidence remains linked to the final coated lot.

Do not accept one generic “surface finish pass” line for both stages. Separate records make failures diagnosable and prevent a cosmetic judgment from releasing an unproven coating interface.

How to Resolve Conflicting Functional and Cosmetic Results

If a route passes adhesion but fails the cosmetic master, first determine whether substrate profile, coating film build, cure or viewing condition causes the appearance. Narrowing the blast profile may improve appearance but must be repeated through the coating-performance tests. If appearance passes while adhesion or residue fails, the lot remains nonconforming; visual quality cannot release a weak interface.

Use matched samples and change one controlled variable at a time. Record the approved compromise as a new combined window with separate intermediate and final limits. Do not move the appearance master toward the failed lot simply to avoid requalification.

Supplier quotations should identify which inspections occur at the blasting operation and which occur after coating. This clarifies responsibility when separate facilities perform the two stages and ensures that neither supplier assumes the other has verified the missing evidence.

Coating-preparation and cosmetic inspection answer different questions. A strong specification keeps those questions separate, then combines their evidence only where the delivered part genuinely needs both.
