What Production and Surface Records Should Buyers Require for Aluminum Die Cast Parts?

Buyers should require a controlled record set that connects the approved drawing to the alloy, die, casting settings, trim, machining, surface treatment, inspection, packaging, and every authorized change. The purpose is not to collect paperwork for its own sake. The record should let the buyer identify which process state produced a part, which features were checked, what evidence supports release, and what changed when a repeat order no longer matches the approved sample.

For aluminum die cast parts with machined bores, sealing faces, threaded bosses, or coated exteriors, a single final dimensional report is too narrow. It may show the last operation while hiding a changed alloy designation, vent condition, fixture, coating preparation, or inspection state. The record package should follow the component through the operations that can alter function or appearance.

Start With the Controlled Product Definition

Keep the drawing or model-based definition, revision, units, datum scheme, material callout, finish notes, and approved deviations together. Identify the part state for each requirement: as-cast, trimmed, machined, coated, or assembled. Add the approved image or appearance reference where a visible housing or cover has cosmetic zones. If a mating seal, bearing, connector, or fastener controls a feature, retain the relevant interface information with the manufacturing record.

Record the approved tool and process baseline. This includes the die revision, inserts or slides that affect the part, gate and overflow arrangement, venting provisions, cooling changes, ejector locations, and trial or approval status. A tool number alone does not explain whether a change can alter porosity, distortion, flash, or a protected surface. The buyer should be able to connect a part lot to the tool configuration used for it.

Keep Casting and Machining Records Connected

For the casting step, retain the material identification and the process information needed by the agreed control plan. The level of detail depends on the part and the contract, but functional risk zones should be visible: sealing flanges, pressure passages, heavy bosses, long thin walls, and datum pads. If a trial changed a gate, overflow, vent, cooling feature, or trim boundary, record the reason and the evidence used to accept the change.

For machining, record the fixture and datum logic rather than only the finished numbers. A bore may be in position when located from a milled face and out of relationship when located from an unstable casting edge. A flange may measure flat while clamped and relax after unloading. Retain the setup revision, supports, clamp logic, program revision, tool or gauge method, and whether the inspection was performed in a fixture or free state. The CNC machining route is part of the product definition whenever it creates an assembly interface.

Link nonconformance records to the affected lot and operation. A note such as “reworked face” should identify what was removed, why the normal process did not meet the requirement, how the rework was inspected, and whether the action is temporary or incorporated into the approved process. This distinction matters because a hand-corrected sample can otherwise become an accidental reference for repeat production.

Define Surface Treatment and Final-State Records

Surface records should state the substrate condition, cleaning or preparation route, masking map, coating or conversion process, curing or drying condition when relevant, and final acceptance method. “Black,” “painted,” or “protected” does not identify coverage, edge boundaries, texture, adhesion, or the features that must remain bare. A gasket land, thread, bearing seat, electrical contact, and visible exterior may need different controls on the same aluminum die cast part.

Keep the finish record tied to the final inspection state. Measure or inspect the relevant appearance and fit after all operations that can alter them. If coating buildup affects a thread or press fit, show the feature's acceptance condition and masking decision. The post-process service scope can help define preparation, deburring, blasting, coating, and masking questions, but the approved record must still name the part-specific result.

Make Change Control Useful

Require a change record whenever the supplier proposes a new alloy designation, tool insert, gate or vent, casting setting, trim method, fixture, CNC program, coating supplier, surface preparation, packaging method, or inspection method that could affect the part. The record should describe the old and new condition, reason for change, affected features, risk review, sample or test evidence, approval authority, and effective lot or date. A process improvement is still a product-control event if it changes a functional or visible feature.

At repeat order, compare the new lot against the approved baseline using the same critical features and part state. Do not compare only weight or outside appearance. Review material identity, machining datums, sealing or locating features, coating coverage, and any inspection method that was changed. If the drawing, quantity, finish, or application has changed, reopen the affected decisions instead of assuming the earlier approval covers the new scope.

A useful record system answers three questions quickly: what was made, how was it made, and why was it accepted? For aluminum die cast parts, that chain should include the casting route and the post-casting operations that create the delivered component. It gives engineering a factual basis for release and gives purchasing a clear boundary for repeat-order comparison.
