Buyers should compare color-change cost through cleanup labor, lost material, minimum purchase, line downtime, contamination risk, batch size, inventory, inspection and scrap. Powder cost is not only price per kilogram, and wet-paint cost is not only mixed volume. A route that is economical for one stable color can be expensive for frequent small custom batches.

The quote should show which setup cost is charged per color, per batch or across annual volume. It should also state whether reclaimed powder is allowed, how activated liquid leftovers are treated and what color matching evidence is included.

Booth, guns, hoses, pumps, racks and recovery equipment may need cleaning. Powder remaining in the system can contaminate the next color, especially when moving between dark, light, textured or special-effect finishes. Minimum powder orders and shelf life can dominate a small batch.

Fast-color-change equipment can reduce downtime, but the actual line and cleanliness requirement control the benefit. Reclaim can improve transfer efficiency on long stable runs, while short custom runs may not generate enough recoverable material or may prohibit mixing reclaimed and virgin powder.

Liquid systems need gun, cup, pump and line flushing. Mixed multi-component paint may have limited pot life, so unused material can become waste. Solvent or water handling, filter changes and booth cleaning add cost. Metallic and translucent colors may require more trial panels and application control.

Small quantities can sometimes be mixed closer to need, which may favor wet paint for many low-volume colors. However, minimum manufacturer packs, color formulation charges and leftover components still matter. The painting quotation should identify coat count and mix assumptions.

How Batch Sequencing Changes the Result

Suppliers can group colors from light to dark or by chemistry to reduce cleanout, but buyer delivery dates may prevent ideal campaigns. A forecast with color quantities and timing enables a more accurate price than an annual total without mix. Emergency small batches often carry a larger setup allocation.

For a hypothetical program with one black high-volume housing and six low-volume custom colors, powder may remain economical for black while liquid paint serves the custom variants. A mixed strategy must still maintain equivalent service requirements and separate finish approvals. This is a costing model, not a Neway quote.

How Color Inventory and Obsolescence Should Be Priced

Color-specific powder and paint components have storage requirements and shelf lives. A forecast change can leave material that cannot be used on another program. The commercial agreement should state whether the buyer purchases full minimum packs, owns remaining material, pays storage or accepts a later obsolescence charge.

Lot-to-lot color continuity can require retaining enough material for one campaign or reapproving a new lot. Long-term storage is not always the answer because powder flow or liquid components can age. Suppliers should follow manufacturer storage data and show how identity and expiration are controlled.

Design teams can reduce cost by using a stable standard palette, interchangeable covers or late-stage cosmetic components rather than assigning many colors to the complete housing. This is a product decision that may save more than negotiating the per-part coating price.

What Data a Color-Change Quote Should Show

Provide part area, rack quantity, batch size, annual units by color, color standard, gloss, texture, coating system, acceptable campaign lead time and change frequency. Ask for setup charge, minimum batch, material minimum, unit price, retained inventory responsibility and expiration policy.

For powder, the powder coating proposal should state reclaim assumptions. For wet paint, the quote should state mixing and pot-life assumptions. Both should include first-article color approval and how a later powder or paint-lot change is controlled.
