How Should Cast Datum Pads Be Protected During Deburring and Blasting?

Cast datum pads should be identified on the operation drawing, kept outside uncontrolled tool and media paths, and checked in the same supported condition before and after mechanical finishing. Protection can combine a physical shield, a qualified temporary mask, controlled fixture contact and a defined no-grind zone. The selected method must preserve the pad's location, usable contact area and specified surface condition without leaving adhesive, embedded media or clamp damage.

A cast pad used by the first machining fixture is not automatically a finished drawing datum. It is a temporary manufacturing reference whose condition affects how the part enters the next operation. The post-process route therefore needs a pad register stating which contacts locate, which only support, which are later machined away and which remain available for inspection.

Mark the full boundary of each pad, not merely a point at its center. A locator needs enough undamaged area for repeatable contact; a support pad must not acquire a burr that rocks the casting; an inspection target must remain accessible to the intended probe or gauge. The drawing should also show nearby gate vestiges, parting flash, ejector marks and ribs because removing one of those features can direct a grinder across the protected land.

Define the required evidence in terms of function. Surface gouges, peening, raised burrs, embedded abrasive and local rounding may matter even when the nominal pad height appears unchanged. Conversely, a minor texture change may be acceptable on a support that is not a measurement feature, provided the approved contact and stability criteria remain satisfied. This distinction prevents a broad cosmetic rule from replacing a contact-specific requirement.

For local gate cleanup, the fixture should expose the gate vestige while physically blocking a tool path toward the pad. A sacrificial guard is more repeatable than an instruction to stop by eye. Tool type, maximum permitted contact zone and approach direction belong on the work instruction. If the pad is close to a runner, inspect after gross gate removal and again after fine deburring; the two steps create different damage modes.

During sand blasting, a rigid shield can protect a well-defined flat land, while plugs or caps may suit adjacent bores. Temporary tape or liquid mask is acceptable only after compatibility with the cleaning chemistry, blast media and exposure time has been demonstrated. Adhesive transfer can be as harmful as the texture it prevents, especially if the pad later locates a machining fixture. Mask removal therefore includes residue inspection and cleaning that does not alter the pad.

Handling contacts need the same discipline. A protected pad can still be dented when parts are nested face-to-face or clamped against residual media. Rack and basket drawings should identify intended contacts. Cleanliness checks apply to fixture buttons and separators as well as to the casting, because a single trapped abrasive grain can create a high spot that changes localization.

Prove That the Pad Survived Each Handoff

Before destructive cleanup begins, retain a representative baseline for the pad set: photographs under defined lighting, surface-condition notes and dimensional or stability results using the intended support scheme. After deburring and blasting, repeat the same method. Changing the support points, restraint or alignment between readings can disguise whether the process changed the pad.

Useful checks include a rocking or contact-transfer check on the designed support set, height or relative-location measurements where the drawing requires them, and magnified visual review of the pad boundary. A flatness result only has meaning when the measured feature, alignment, restraint and part state are defined. The buyer does not need a universal flatness promise; the buyer needs evidence that the protected reference still performs its assigned operation.

Three-Pad Cover With a Gate Near One Support

Consider a die cast gearbox cover that enters post machining on three cast support pads. One gate vestige sits near the tertiary support, while the exterior field will be blasted. The operation drawing marks all three footprints, adds a hard stop to the gate-removal fixture and directs the abrasive nozzle away from the pad set. A reusable cover shields the tertiary land during blasting.

The first trial records contact transfer on all three pads before cleanup, after gate removal and after blasting. If the tertiary contact shrinks or a raised edge appears, the part is held while tool approach, shield fit and blast angle are corrected. Machining does not begin merely because the exterior texture looks uniform. The handoff occurs when gate residual, pad surface condition, three-point stability and mask-residue checks all meet their drawing-linked limits.

For quotation, buyers should provide the pad boundary, its temporary or permanent role, the next fixture's contact arrangement, nearby removal zones, the allowed edge and surface condition, the blasting exclusion area and the required comparison method. Suppliers should return a contact map, protection method, inspection stage and reaction plan for any pad damaged before machining.
